KEEP MY HAIR OUT OF YOUR HAND.
In some foreign countries where people of color travel to, a lot of people are not used to seeing black women with braids or different textured hairs. Which results to people touching without permission. This is especially evident in South Korea, there’s this foreboding feeling of someone always watching you on the subway, bus or when walking somewhere. The ever daunting feeling of someone reaching out to grasp a slight feel of the texture of your afro, locks or wig. The lack of respect that has been shown to black women in Asian countries is beyond demeaning, we are seen as “exotic” because of the texture of our hair or the color of our skin, when in reality we are women, one with the human race.
In 1851, activist Sojourner Truth took to the podium and asked “ar’n’t I a woman?” This is a question we ask every time a hand decides to lay hands in our hair, we are women just like other women of different ethnic backgrounds, just because ours are more prominent does not give you the audacity to put your hands on our head. Curious or not about black women, we are not the object of your stereotypical expectation. India Arie once sang “I am not my hair, I am not this skin, I am a soul that lives within”. We smile, we laugh, we breathe, just like every other woman.. we insist.. your hands, your touch, should not come in contact to our hair without our permission.

“Depression is a state of mind that one could overcome” so they say but, is it that easy? throughout the years thousands of people have lost their lives due to this, millions of people suffer from depression all over the world. Being confined within our minds when we try to overcome this feeling a formidable appearance appears and tells us otherwise. Mathew Johnstone writer and illustrator of the book ‘I had a black dog: his name was depression’ describes this appearance as something of an unhinged burden that follows you everywhere. He says “keeping up an emotional lie is exhausting, black dog could make me think and say negative things, he can make me irritable and difficult to be around’.
Depression is a devoid of emotions, simply put being trapped in a space of nothingness, it’s not about feeling sad or down it’s something much more, rooted deep inside, a lot of people turn to self-medication for help…but is that really the answer or are we masking and rotting away on the inside? In the darkest of times instead of facing it alone, the first step to tackling this void is by reaching for that friendly hand that is willing to help, it’s the hand that could change your life. Step by step, take a breath and show your willingness to being helped.

Can you hear the voices of the autumn breeze?
Your bark shivers slightly as the colour of your flesh turn from the emeralds of green to a beautiful golden brown. What befalls this season? What befalls the dream of wearing that autumn jacket? The seams billowing and rustling like light feathers as humans walk into this new season, The wisp of the chilly wind bringing an end to the summer nights.

Korea is slowly becoming a forefront for fashion,
The 2019 F/W Seoul fashion kicked off this October to some spectacular designers showcasing their art, bringing a whole new meaning to the industry.
Although what was interesting to see, were the people who turned up to showcase their unique style at the Dongdaemun design plaza. Here are some of my favorite street-style.

Paris Lee a formidable designer, brought the audience garments that exudes elegance and strength that which represents African women, in the modern and future generation we live in all whilst remaining minimal and eye-catching.

The seams and detailing of the dresses shows just how much hard was put in to make such a remarkable collection by Paris, the ensemble was a spectacular combination of delicateness and boldness all in one.
Bringing Mother Africa to a country near you.
Mama Africa, a deadly kind of beauty, to the unforeseen eyes she may not mean much but, to the known she shines bright, her light never dims. Appreciate the essence of her wisdom, feel the nourishment of her culture: music, fashion food. She is everywhere and anywhere, with us in our hearts, in the steps we take she watches over us, she protects us.
